- The Global Benefits of Remote Worker & Student Programs In A Global Economy — by Hawke — last modified 2007-06-11 01:17
- The Internet and new technologies have made remote work and study a much more viable option than 20 years ago. Companies and educational institutions can benefit from significant cost savings, improved productivity and worker morale. According to some studies, in 2005 around a quarter of the working population in many countries worked remotely (Australian Telework Advisory Committee 2005). Many millions of workers and students around the world now work remotely either part time or full time. The world as a whole can benefit environmentally from reducing the impact of so many commuters. Remote workers are shown on the whole to provide increased productivity, have less sick time and leave, and have better morale (Aspire Magazine 2007). Many people and organizations in the US are resistant to change and have continued to fight the adoption of remote worker projects, while many other countries are gaining significant advantages by wholeheartedly embracing the benefits.

- Misleading Macs — by Hawke — last modified 2008-09-18 16:00
- Recently had a client who (fortunately) made the "big switch" from Windoze to Mac OSX. Without a doubt that's a step in the right direction. But unfortunately. Apple is being extremely dishonest with it's users.. (Originally meant to post on October 10th, 2007)

- Publication on SANS Institute FAQ - Microsoft PPTP Vulnerabilities by Hawke Robinson — by Hawke — last modified 2008-03-19 16:00
- In recent dialogue with someone, I thought to see what the comments and feedback have been on my document on Microsoft's implementation of PPTP was as published by the SANS Institute. I have copied the various comments here. What is most notable is some are as recent as 2007, and most were using my document as the a reference source on the topic.

- Dude You're Getting (Support) Hell! — by Hawke — last modified 2008-09-18 16:19
- I used to recommend Dell as one of the best support companies in the PC market, especially for home and small office, their support was second to none. Their desktops, were decent, and their servers and laptop at least mediocre, with great support. It seems those days are long gone. This is an account of my recent experience with getting Dell support for my XPS m1330n (Ubuntu), and just how far downhill Dell has come with their support...
- Ubuntu on Dell XPS m1330n Review, Part II (7.10 to 8.04.1) — by Hawke — last modified 2008-09-18 16:23
- I have been evaluating Ubuntu on my Dell XPS m1330n since I purchased it in February/March of 2008. The version that came installed, 7.0.4 was absolutely terrible, however 8.0.4.x has been a significant improvement (night and day difference), as least from a home-user perspective, but has a long way to go for a business environment. This is my very detailed review of 7.10 and why no one should use it, and a less detailed, but much more positive review of 8.0.4.x and why, for some users, it is worth at least looking at when considering different distros...

- Operating System/Platform Zealotry — by Hawke — last modified 2008-09-20 01:26
- They say the three topics you should never discuss in a casual conversation that you wish to keep polite and friendly are Politics, Sex & Religion. Maybe technology platform should be added to the list. Whether PC vs. Mac (not much difference there anymore), Windows vs. Mac vs. Linux vs. whatever, PSP vs. DS, PS3 vs. Xbox360 vs. Wii, people are becoming incredibly "zealous" and more polarized on such topics. Here's my more than two cents worth, for whatever that's worth these days...
- Overview of Online CMS (Content Management System) Platforms - Part I — by Hawke — last modified 2008-09-20 01:36
- I have been using various online Content Management Systems since the 90's. They have certainly come a long way from those primitive days, but of course, they still have a long way to go too. Here I will discuss my overall experience with difference CMS's including the various *Nuke and php-based, Python-based Zope (and later Zope/Plone), Broadvision, Silverstream, and others over the years as a comparison. Maybe these experiences and insights, will help those who are trying to find the right CMS platform for their needs.
- chmod only directories, or specific files, recursively. — by Hawke — last modified 2008-10-19 01:04
- I keep forgetting the exact syntax of this command, so thought I would post it to myself (and anyone who could benefit from it) here, where Iknow I can find it anywhere.
- Change Open Office Default Language (default template) — by Hawke — last modified 2008-11-02 17:22
- I finally found the solution to this at last. For whatever reason, I've had this problem with Suse since 10.x days, it might be all the multi-lingual packages I install, but even removing them does not stop it from defaulting all my "New Writer" and "New Sheet" pages from being Czech Language! I don't have this problem with the OS or other office applications (kword, etc.).
- Find and copy *.<ext> from multiple directories into one directory recursively. — by Hawke — last modified 2008-10-19 01:05

- Sustainable water and energy solution. — by Hawke — last modified 2008-11-20 17:24
- Admittedly, I need to perform more research on this, but from an initial review, it at least _seems_ viable. I very much invite comment and debate on this, and the merits and deficits.
